Author Program & Book Signing: Lindsey Fitzharris, author of “The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister’s Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine”
Date: October 27, 2017
Time: 7pm
Location: James A. Garfield National Historic Site
8095 Mentor Ave., Mentor.

Joseph Lister was a British doctor that first proposed and confirmed the existence of germs. American doctors—including those treating President Garfield after he was shot—were slow to accept Lister’s theories and introduced a fatal infection into his body. Dr. Lindsey Fitzharris is the creator and host of the popular You Tube medical history series “Under the Knife,” and in The Butchering Art she conjures up early operating theaters―no place for the squeamish―and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. These pioneers knew that the aftermath of surgery was often more dangerous than patients’ afflictions, and they were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. She will sign copies of her book The Butchering Art after the program. Book will be available for purchase in our Eastern National bookstore. This program is free to the public!

Living History Tours at Oberlin's Westwood Cemetery

Enjoy a fascinating, family-friendly (and non-frightening) look at local history this Halloween season when the Heritage Center presents an autumn stroll through Westwood Cemetery featuring tales of early Oberlin citizens told by costumed interpreters of the past. This year's one-hour guided tour introduces new characters and their stories focusing on medicine, diet, and health in Oberlin. Reservations should be made in advance and tickets are $10 for adults/$5 for children (most likely to be enjoyed by ages 7 and up) or $8 adults/$4 children for OHC members. The tour begins at 4:00 p.m. each day, and participants should gather at the cemetery entrance (429 Morgan Street). This event filled up quickly last year, so make your reservations early!

Make a reservation - click here.

Photo: Last year's fall cemetery tour included OHC Board Member Judy Cook (at right) portraying Adelia Field Johnston, the first female faculty member at Oberlin College (1878) who later became Dean of Women.

Silent Film Jekyll & Hyde with Dorothy Papadakos
Sunday, October 29, 4:00pm
Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown, 330-259-0555
Budding from the story written by Robert Louis Stevenson, this 1920 film follows the actions of Dr. Henry Jekyll. His enthusiasm for science and his idealist, philanthropic behavior made Dr. Jekyll an admired man. After being criticized for his reluctance to experience the sensual side of life, he thought “Wouldn’t it be marvelous if the two natures in man could be separated.” He developed a potion that would do just that, creating the hideously evil creature whom he names Edward Hyde. Jekyll begins to live his double life, but it is not long before the personality of Hyde begins to dominate. Dorothy Papadakos is a member of the seven-time Grammy Award-winning Paul Winter Consort. She came to international attention as the first woman to be Cathedral Organist of the world’s largest gothic cathedral, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, from 1990 to 2003. She is celebrated for her daring and imaginative improvisations as well as her scores for theatre, film, television and ballet.

RENT - 20th Annuversary Tour

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson's RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

THE HUMANS

Stephen Karam's The Humans is an uproarious, hopeful, and heartbreaking play that takes place over the course of a family dinner on Thanksgiving. Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate and give thanks at his daughter's apartment in Lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the Blake clan's deepest fears and greatest follies are laid bare. Our modern age of anxiety is keenly observed, with humor and compassion, in this new American classic that won the 2016 Tony Award® for Best Play.
