The Rail May 7, 2017

Team "Breast Man Walking" and The Rail Burger Bar Partner For Final Time at Rail Against Breast Cancer

Fairlawn, OH – Akronites, Kathy and Lee Giller and Nancy Schrader are teaming up again with THE RAIL Burger Bar at Summit Mall for its 6th annual and FINAL "Rail Against Breast Cancer" benefit. The event will be held on Sunday May 7, 2017 from 5:30-8:30pm to raise funds for their participation in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, a 60-mile walk to end breast cancer.

The 3-Day is deeply personal for the Giller family. Lee is battling Stage IV breast cancer and their young daughter faced her own diagnosis at the age of 28. For the past 10 years, the Giller's have walked in 19 of these events and have raised close to a half-million dollars to help find a cure. They named their team "Breast Man Walking" as a means of raising awareness about the risks men also can face. This will be their last event though they will remain committed to doing their part to fight this disease.

Ticket holders for the "Rail Against Breast Cancer" will enjoy an evening of live music by Akron's Swizzle Stick Band, auction and raffle items, as well as The Rail's all-Ohio burger sliders, locally sourced hand-dipped milkshakes, locally distilled spirts and tasty house-made sides. The Rail staff volunteers their time for the evening.

Advance reservations for this private event can be made by contacting The Rail at 330-864-RAIL (7245). Ticket prices are $75/person ($55 tax deductible). If you can't make it to the event, you can make your own contribution while dining at any of The Rail locations, now through May 6th. We're proud to say that over the past five years, with your help, we've helped raise more than $50,000 for team Breast Man Walking and the fight against breast cancer, and we hope our final year can be just as successful! Join in the fight, and help make a difference today.

Heritage Center Presents Oberlin Serves in World War II

Oberlin Heritage Center Trustee and community historian Steve Johnson continues his discussion of World War II's local impact in a free public program on Tuesday, May 9, at 7:15 p.m. at Kendal at Oberlin's Heiser Auditorium (600 Kendal Drive). This is the second in a two-part series on Oberlin townspeople's participation in the war. Johnson has done months of original research using newspaper archives, oral histories and other resources. The program series is being sponsored by Northwest Savings Bank.

Johnson's presentation focuses on Oberlinians' service in the military – on the frontlines as pilots, infantrymen and medical personnel, as well as behind-the-scenes in research, intelligence and logistics. The program also includes a special salute to those who lost their lives in the war.

Stephen Johnson III is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University receiving both Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees. He was a band director for 29 years, 25 of them in the Oberlin schools, prior to retiring from active teaching in 2002. He served in the armed forces as a member of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division Association and has been a long-time student of World War II history. Johnson also has been a Trustee of the Oberlin Heritage Center since 2011.

The Friends of Punderson are bringing back the car shows at Punderson State Park! These are being held in an effort to raise approximately $35,000 for a new beach area parking lot playground.

Our first event will be a "Classic Cruise-In" at the Sports Chalet parking lot (about 80 vehicles) on Thursday, May 18th at 6:00pm. This is a FREE event and refreshments will be offered by the Friends of Punderson to help raise donations for this project. As this first event is to create interest and get more people involved, we plan to move these events to the Beach Parking Lot, where we can accommodate around 300 vehicles. Refreshments will be available from 6:00 to 8:30pm. Vehicles for show may arrive as early as 5:30 to start filling the lot – we would love to see any classics cars, trucks, motorcycles and any other interesting vehicles for spectators! Because this lot is small, please DO NOT reserve spaces for chairs or friends – we are using this lot to start because we will have the Sports Chalet available where you can come in and sit, get a bite to eat and use the restrooms.

Historical Council of Medina County Dandelion Drive
Dandelion Drive - A Journey in Time
Date: May 21, 2017
Time: 11AM - 5PM
Location: Medina County, OH

In 2016 several of Medina County's historical societies got together and came up with the idea of hosting a History Day. A total of sixteen historical societies and museums across the county joined in and participated in the first History Day event.

As the year progressed, the group became known as the Historical Council of Medina County. There was too much ground to cover and most visitors could not attend all of the open historical societies and museums in just one day. Different regions throughout the county were formed and each year, the now Dandelion Drive – A Journey in Time, will be held the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend each year.

The drive-it-yourself tour will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2017 from 11am to 5pm. The stops will include: Litchfield Township Historical Society, York Historical Society, Medina County Historical Society, Medina Town Hall and Engine House Museum and The Little Wiz Fire Museum. at Lake County History Center, 415 Riverside Drive, Painesville, Ohio 44077
Do ghosts and spirits really haunt the former Lake County Poorhouse? Come take a walk through the long dark corridors with nothing but a candlelight to illuminate the way. Escape into the past as our guides provide you with an eerie yet fun-filled adventure! You'll visit all the locations around the Lake County History Center where shadows and ghostly figures have said to have been sighted. You'll go to off-limits areas where many have reported hearing creepy sounds and feeling unseen hands touch them. You'll hear stories of unbelievable historically documented events that have taken place in the past, including those in the infirmary and attic. And, we'll even visit the foreboding cells used in the bygone days of the Lake County Poorhouse. We will demonstrate and you may borrow "ghost hunting" equipment, such as EMF detectors and dowsing rods, while on your tour! (or bring your own equipment – paranormal activity has been documented many times on previous explorations of the LCHS)

The exclusive lantern-lit tour is only open to 20 participants. This event is not suitable for children.

Location: Downtown Lakewood - Detroit Avenue between Marlowe and Elmwood
Admission: Free
Description:

Get ready to add some sizzle to your summer!  Lakewood Summer Meltdown 2017, sponsored by Melt Bar & Grilled and presented by LakewoodAlive, is back for its eighth year on Saturday, July 8 from 4-10 p.m.

The Summer Meltdown represents one of the region’s most highly-anticipated street parties and drew nearly 10,000 attendees from across Northeast Ohio to the heart of Lakewood last year. This fixture on our city’s summer calendar takes place on Detroit Avenue in Downtown Lakewood between Marlowe and Elmwood. A “something for everyone” event, the Summer Meltdown offers seemingly endless recreation and celebration opportunities, including a 5K race, 1 Mile Kids Fun Run, street festival, outdoor activities, games, food vendors, beer garden, live music and more.

Families will love the street festival component, which features free programs from 70+ businesses and nonprofits organizations, including numerous interactive opportunities. Activities range from a sprinkler park to skateboarding to demonstrations of yoga and other exercises.

The ever-popular Meltdown 5K draws hundreds of participants annually, as it features a fast course, chip timing, a fashionable t-shirt for participants and prizes for top finishers. Both this running event and the 1 Mile Kids Fun Run afford participants a rare opportunity to partake in an evening race.

Local brews available in the Beer Garden presented by First Federal Lakewood will complement dining options from vendors and food trucks. Live music will delight the crowd as dusk turns to nightfall in beautiful Downtown Lakewood.

RENT - 20th Annuversary Tour

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson's RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

THE HUMANS

Stephen Karam's The Humans is an uproarious, hopeful, and heartbreaking play that takes place over the course of a family dinner on Thanksgiving. Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate and give thanks at his daughter's apartment in Lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the Blake clan's deepest fears and greatest follies are laid bare.
