Dinner with a Slice of History
Date: October 5, 2018
Location: International Women's Air & Space Museum
1501 N Marginal Rd Ste 165, Cleveland, Ohio 44114

Join us as we welcome original member of the Mercury 13, Wally Funk, for a presentation and book signing. Funk, who now has over 18,000 hours of flight time, went through testing at Lovelace Clinic in the early 1960s to try to become one of the first female astronauts. Thirteen women (known as the Mercury 13) qualified for this program and passed all of the tests, only to have the program shut down by Congress. It was over 20 years later when America finally had a female astronaut. After the cancellation of the program, Funk continued to fly as a goodwill ambassador, taught over 3,000 students as a flight instructor, and was the first female to be an Air Safety Investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board. She has participated in several air races, appeared on various television and radio programs, and enjoys encouraging young people to get into aviation. Funk still hopes to get into space as part of the Virgin Galactic Space program.

Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with presentation and signing to follow.

Martha Cliffel: Re-Source-Full opening reception
Date: Oct 12, 2018
Time: 7-9pm
Location: BAYarts, 28795 Lake Road, Bay Village OH, 44140
BAYarts.net

This body of work deals with the detritus of life repurposed into provocative objects. Martha uses her time on the streets walking as an opportunity to trash pick and find value and beauty in the many discarded objects that have been part of other people's lives. Martha is an intuitive builder and gleans meaning from the juxtaposition of disparate and sometimes haunting objects. She combines her history as a mother and teacher with her innate abilities as an artist to subvert the natural purposes of the "starter" objects she finds. Her sculptures are both intentionally irreverent and holy at the same time.

Allison Polgar: Neighborhood Landscapes opening reception
Date: Oct 12, 2018 (Show October 12 - November 10, 2018)
Time: 7-9pm
Location: BAYarts, 28795 Lake Road, Bay Village OH, 44140
BAYarts.net

Allison Polgar's current work focuses on the transformation of neighborhood landscapes through the restructuring of residential housing. She explores these transforming landscapes by depicting their various components: man-made mountains of dirt that seem to rise overnight, skeletal building frames looming over spare deserts, and bruised construction barrels seemingly huddled in conversation with one another. Through her explorations she draws attention to the strange, often unnoticed, beauty and personality of these landscapes while also investigating the disruption that occurs when a specific brand of progress or revitalization is imposed upon an existing neighborhood.

Massillon Cemetery Walking Tour to Feature Mausoleums

Take a leisurely stroll through Massillon Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, to learn about the history of the community, the cemetery, and some of the influential people buried there.

Local historian Margy Vogt will lead visitors around the perimeter of the grounds to see the exteriors of the mausoleums. She will tell about the prominent families buried in the beautiful vaults. Among the notable people will be women's rights leader Caroline McCullough Everhard; industrialists J.F. Hess and F.H. Snyder; Congressman John G. Warwick; iron and coal magnate J.P. Burton; Albert M. Wetter, who owned a circus; and the Grabers, Allmans, and Putmans, who operated downtown businesses.

The 1.25-mile walk will be slow and shady, covering both paved lanes and grassy paths of the 172-year-old graveyard.

Massillon Cemetery is located at 1827 South Erie Street in Massillon, just south of the Oberlin Road exit and north of the Erie Street exit from Ohio Route 21.

Participants should meet at the cemetery entrance. Cemetery parking is limited, but ample free parking is available on both sides of South Erie Street. Reservations are not necessary; the $7 fee may be paid at the beginning of the tour.

The walk will last about two hours. In case of inclement weather, the tour will be cancelled—call 330-832-8469 for last-minute weather verification.

The final Massillon Cemetery tour for 2018 will be held on Sunday, October 28, at 2:00 p.m., when Mandy Altimus Stahl will lead a tour of Massillon Cemetery monuments in the central part of the cemetery, talking about more than five dozen influential Massillonians of the past.

Copies of Vogt's hardbound photographic history, Massillon: Reflections of a Community, and her paperbound Fourth Street: A Century of History and Design will be available for purchase at the tours.

For more information about local walking tours, contact Margy Vogt at 330-832-8469 or vogt@sssnet.com.

Describing the fall tour, Guthrie said, "It's being called 'The Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant - Back By Popular Demand Tour.' That's about the longest name for a tour we've ever had. This time, we're celebrating the 50th anniversary of the movie 'Alice's Restaurant,' which was released in 1969. We're also including references to the other major event of my life in 1969 - Woodstock. But, it's not all backward looking."

Tickets: $40

From the 19th to 21st century, the former county poorhouse (now our history museum), has given shelter to numerous residents, both wicked & benign. Orphans, the injured, and criminals have all had a role in sculpting the history of this grand brick building. Enter our labyrinthine halls for an intense wander through the rooms and into usually restricted spaces. Follow guides as you linger in hotspots of spiritual activity, like the old infirmary, and the foreboding cells in the basement. Try to draw out our lingering, ghostly occupants, both charming and terrifying! Whether you're new to ghost hunting or a seasoned investigator, there's something to find in our unlit corridors. Watch & learn how to operate various forms of ghost-hunting equipment from EMF detectors to voice recorders; have your own tools like a flashlight or cellphone? Bring them along and see what you capture. Doors open at 8:15 pm.

Limited to the first 40 people registered! Due to the nature of this program, children under 18 are not permitted. A liability waiver must be signed in order to attend. Need more information? Call 440-639-2945
